Black and White Granny Square Pattern

Hobbii yarn’s Rainbow Cotton is one of my favorite yarns, and a while ago I got this variegated skein of it that consisted of different shades of grey, black, and cream. I couldn’t decide what to make with it, and eventually, I decided to try to make a pillow with it. I paired it with some other shades of Hobbii Rainbow Cotton 8/4 and this color combination is now one of my favorites! If you don’t have any variegated yarn in your stash and you want to create a similar color combination, you could use grey or cream for the centers of the squares. I can’t wait to see the colors that you choose!

I filmed a video tutorial for this granny square that is on my YouTube channel, so I wanted to post the written pattern for the square here. If you would like to make a pillow with them, the full pillow pattern is available as a print-friendly pdf on Ravelry (link below) as it is a little bit longer. Otherwise, there are lots of projects that you can use these squares for! I hope you enjoy the pattern and let me know if you have any questions (you can email me at maggietrunkhill@daisygirlcrochet.com). If you make some of these squares, I would love to see them, so if you share a picture of them on Instagram, please use the hashtag #crochetbydaisygirlcrochet and tag me!

Starting Stitches

At the beginning of a round/row, a ch 2 counts as the first hdc st, a ch 3 counts as the first dc st, and a ch 4 counts as the first tr st (unless stated otherwise).

A ch 1 at the beginning of a round usually does not count as a stitch, so I will note if it should be counted.

The Pattern

“Solid” refers to the color of the granny square

Each of the squares I made where about 4 by 4 in (10 by 10 cm)

Foundation: With the variegated, begin with a magic circle.

Round 1: Ch 3 (counts as first dc throughout), 11 dc into the magic circle. Close the magic circle. Ss into the top of the ch 3. (12).

Round 2: [Ch 2 + 4 dc pc (counts as first 5 dc pc), ch 1]. [5 dc pc, ch 1] into each of the following sts of the previous round. Then, ss into the first popcorn st, and fasten off. (12 pc sts + 12 ch-sps).

Flip the work, so the pc sts are facing up. For this round, we will only work into the ch-sps that are between the pc sts of the previous round- not the pc sts.

Round 3: Join the solid into any ch-sp of the previous round. [Ch 3, dc, ch 2, 2 dc]. In each of the next two ch-sps, [2 dc]. { In the next ch-sp, [2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc]. In each of the next two ch-sps, [2 dc] }. Repeat {} 2 more times. Then, ss into the top of the ch 3. (32 sts + 4 ch2-sps).

Round 4: Ch 3, then dc into each st of the previous round. Except, in the ch2-sps, [2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc]. Then, ss into the top of the ch 3, and fasten off. (48 sts + 4 ch2-sps).

Round 5: Join the variegated into any ch2-sp of the previous round. [Ch 2 (counts as first hdc throughout), hdc, ch 2, 2 hdc]. Along the next side, BP dc into each st. {In the ch2-sp, [2 hdc, ch 2, 2 hdc]. Along the next side, BP dc into each st}. Repeat {} two more times. Then, ss into the top of the ch 2, and fasten off. (64 sts + 4 ch2-sps).

Round 6: Join the solid into any ch2-sp of the previous round. Ch 3, then skip the next hdc st of the previous round, and dc into each st along the next side (there will be 15 dc). {In the ch2-sp, [2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc]. Skip over the next hdc st of the previous round, and dc into each of the sts along the next side}. Repeat {} 2 more times. In the ch2-sp, [2 dc, ch 2, dc, ss into the top of the ch 3, and fasten off]. (76 sts + 4 ch2-sps).
