Behind the Scenes of the Pink Lace Pillow Pattern

Hi! I recently shared the pattern for this Pink Lace Pillow, and I wanted to talk about some of the background information (yarn, size, materials, etc.) as well as discuss the inspiration behind the pattern and the process of creating it. This is the first time I have written a behind the scenes blog post, so I am very excited!

First, here are the pattern links. There are two video tutorials on my YouTube channel for this pattern: one for the flower granny square and one for joining the squares. The full pillow pattern is available as a print-friendly pdf on Ravelry. It is written in both U.S. and UK terms (there is a pdf file for each).

Of course, you can use these squares for lots of different projects! If you make some of these squares and post them on Instagram, make sure to tag me, so I can see them!

Inspiration

If you follow me on Instagram, you have probably noticed that when I add music to posts, I include a lot of Taylor Swift songs. The Folklore Era has always been my favorite, and during this era of the tour, one of the dresses that she wears is a blush pink lace flower dress. It made me want to try to crochet some pink lacey flowers and use pink as the background color of the granny squares. I had never made a project where the background color is the same as the color of the flowers, so at first, I was afraid they would not show up very well.

The Process

It took a couple of tries to make sure that the flowers for the granny squares were “lacey” enough.

Originally, I was going to make the entire front side of the pillow pink. However, one of my favorite things about crocheting is coming up with color combinations, so I could not resist adding some other colors! I began by bordering the squares with brown and green. Then, I added the lavender. While I liked this color combination, I felt like it needed a pop of color.

Therefore, I added the raspberry pink. I think this one is my favorite of the four. You can never have enough shades of pink in a project!

Once I finished crocheting all of the squares, I filmed a video while joining them. Whenever I make a pillow with solid granny squares, I always follow the same process to join them. Now I can add this video link into a lot of my other patterns!

For the back side, I planned to use the colors that border the flower granny squares. I ran out of lavender and only had a little bit of raspberry leftover, so I added some light yellow.

As always, I attached five buttons to hold the bottom of the pillow together and allow the pillowcase to be taken on and off the insert.

Pattern Details

Size

When making a pillow, the pillowcase should always be 1-2 in (2.5- 5 cm) shorter than the insert, so it is stretched across the insert. The squares for this pillow are each about 4 by 4 in (10 by 10 cm). I made 16 squares, so the front side of the pillow is 16 by 16 in (41 by 41 cm) and it fits an 18 by 18 in (45 by 45 cm) pillow insert.

Materials

  • 3.5 mm crochet hook
  • Scissors and a tapestry needle- for weaving in ends
  • 18 by 18 in (45 by 45 cm) square pillow insert
  • 5 buttons (1.5 cm in diameter)
  • Dk weight yarn

Yarn I Used

Rowan Summerlite DK (100% cotton; 142 yd/ 50 g skeins)

  • 3 powder pink (light pink)
  • 2 pickles (brown)
  • 1 rouge (raspberry)
  • 1 khaki (green)
  • 1 mushroom (lavender)
  • 2 duckling (light yellow)

Gauge and Yarn Substitution

19 sts and 9 rows = 4 in (10 cm)

The gauge provided is measured with U.S. double crochet stitches worked in rows.

If you would like your pillow to be the same size as mine and you are using a different yarn, you can compare the yd/g to see if it would be a good substitute. I would also recommend making a gauge swatch. Otherwise, any lightweight yarn will work well for this pillow! When you finish the front side, measure it, and it will fit a pillow insert that is 1-2 in longer than it.

Enjoy the pattern!

That’s all the details for this pattern! If you make some of the flower granny squares, I would love to see pictures of them. Make sure you tag me if you post them on Instagram! I can’t wait to see what you make with them because there are lots of projects that you can use these squares for!
