How to Crochet a Coffee Coaster- Learn to Crochet Part 5

For part 5, we are going to crochet a coffee coaster! I am trying to add a few small pattern videos into the series for fun! I call these coffee coasters because I like to keep one on my desk to set a mug or cup on. However, you can use them as coasters under plants, as decorations, etc.

The YouTube video is now up, and the written pattern is included here for reference!

Why are there so many coffee coasters in the picture at the beginning of the YouTube video?

I made a bunch of these coasters a few years ago and had planned to sell them at a craft show. I never had a chance due to the pandemic, so I still have a lot of them! Maybe I will get a chance to sell them sometime in the future.

These ones are made with MillaMia Naturally Soft Cotton Yarn (from Lovecraftscom) and a 3.00 mm hook. This yarn is thinner than the yarn I used in the video tutorial, so the circles each have 5 rounds.

Begin with Two Circles

We crocheted flat circles during part 2 of Learn to Crochet. There is a video tutorial, and the pattern is written up in the blog post.

Begin by crocheting two circles that are the same size. The pattern for the scalloped border repeats every 4 stitches and every round of a circle is divisible by 12, so you can add as many rounds as you would like! Additionally, the circles can be two different colors!

I used Hobbii Rainbow Cotton 8/6 Yarn (114.83 yd / 50 g) and a 3.5 mm crochet hook. Each circle has 4 rounds.

You can use any yarn that you would like and adjust the number of rounds as needed!

Stitch Abbrevations

In U.S. Terms (Translated to UK in parentheses)

st= stitch

sp= space

ch= chain (chain)

ss= slip stitch (slip stitch)

dc= double crochet (treble)

[ ] indicate that the sts are worked into the same space

{ } indicate that the the sts are repeated later in the pattern

The Pattern

Hold the front and the back side together. Make sure the front sides are facing out (the side where the ends are weaved in should be on the inside).

Insert the hook into a stitch of the front and into a stitch of the back side.

Lay the cream yarn over the hook.

Pull through.

Ch 1 (counts as the first slip stitch).

For the rest of the pattern, when inserting the hook into the next stitch, also insert it into the next stitch of the other circle (picture 1).

Work 2 double crochet into each of the next 3 stitches (picture 2).

{Slip stitch into the next stitch. Work 2 double crochet into each of the next three stitches}.

Repeat {} til end. Then, ss into the ch 1 from the beginning of the round, and fasten off.

I hope you enjoy the pattern! If you make some of these coasters and share some pictures of them on Instagram, please use the hashtag #crochetbydaisygirlcrochet and tag me, so I can see them!
