For part 9 of Learn to Crochet, we will go over how to use a magic circle to begin crocheting in the round. The video for this part is pretty short. Next week, the video will be for a small pattern that begins with a magic circle!
What is a magic circle?

A magic circle is a way to begin crocheting in the round. In the previous parts of Learn to Crochet, we would always chain 4, slip stitch into the first chain to create a ring to work into. Using a magic circle is another method that is often seen to look neater, but I still prefer to begin by chaining 4 sometimes!
For the purple circle, I began by chaining 4. For the pink circle, I began with a magic circle. The magic circle makes the center tighter to eliminate the gap in the center.

When should I use a magic circle?

A magic circle can be used for any pattern that is worked in the round! It is often required when crocheting, toys, dolls, and animals.
I typically begin with a magic circle whenever I am crocheting circles and flowers. For traditional granny squares, I like to begin by chaining 4.
