Last summer, I had an idea to try to crochet a blanket entirely out of flowers! I started making some flowers, and this summer, I finally had a chance to join them! You can crochet as many flowers as you would like to make your blanket the desired size. You could make a smaller one and place it over the back of a couch or chair. While I was filming the video tutorial and taking the step-by-step pictures, I made some small samples of four flowers joined together that I think I am going to use as decorations! Getting Started
Materials
- 4.00 mm crochet hook
- Scissors and a tapestry needle- for weaving in ends
- Aran weight yarn
Yarn I Used
Paintbox Cotton Aran Yarn (100% cotton; 50 g; 93 yd skeins)
- 3 pale lilac (purple)
- 3 vanilla cream (cream)
- 3 ballet pink (light pink)
- 3 rosy pink (pink)
- 3 vintage pink (vintage pink)
- 3 slate green (blue)
- 3 pistachio green (green)
- 3 mustard yellow (mustard)
- 2 daffodil yellow (yellow)
Note about Yarn Substitution
Due to the daffodil yellow being out of stock, I was only able to use 2 skeins of it in the blanket. You could add more light yellow to your blanket if you would like!
I used Paintbox Cotton Aran yarn for this blanket with a 4.00 mm hook, but you could use a 4.5 mm hook if you would prefer. Any aran or medium weight yarn should work well for this blanket!
Gauge and Size
18 sts and 7 rows = 4 inches (10 cm)
The gauge provided is measured with double crochet sts worked in rows.
Each flower is about 5 by 5 inches, so the finished blanket is 40 by 60 inches (102 by 152 cm).
Abbreviations: In U.S. Terms (Translated to UK in parentheses)
st= stitch
sp= space
ch= chain (chain)
ss= slip stitch (slip stitch)
sc= single crochet (double crochet)
hdc= half double crochet (half treble crochet)
dc= double crochet (treble)
[ ] indicate that the sts are worked into the same space
{ } indicate that the the sts are repeated later in the pattern
* also indicates that stitches are repeated later in the pattern
Starting Stitches
At the beginning of a round/row, a ch 2 counts as the first hdc st, a ch 3 counts as the first dc st, and a ch 4 counts as the first tr st (unless stated otherwise).
A ch 1 at the beginning of a round usually does not count as a stitch, so I will note if it should be counted. Sometimes, it will count as the first slip stitch.
Crochet Techniques
Picot Stitch
Picot stitches are used to create the shapes of the petals. Ch 3 (picture 1). Then, insert your crochet hook into the first ch of the ch 3 (picture 2), and work a single crochet stitch (picture 3). I also demonstrate this stitch in the video!
Join as You Go
To join the flowers, we will be using the join as you go method. I decided to make all of the flowers first and then join them. Except for the first flower, fasten off after round 5 (the second to last round). Then, round 6 will be added to each flower as the flower is joined to the blanket.
The Flower
Make 96
Each is about 5 by 5 in (12.7 by 12.7 cm)
There is a chart below the pattern with the color combinations I used!
With the color of the inside of the flower, begin with a magic circle.
Round 1: Ch 2 (counts as the first hdc throughout), 7 hdc into the magic circle. Close the magic circle. Ss into the top of the ch 2. (8).
Round 2: [Ch 2, hdc]. Into each of the following sts of the previous round, [2 hdc]. Then, ss into the top of the ch 2, and fasten off. (16).
Round 3: Join the color of the petals into any st of the previous round. {Ch 1 (does NOT count as a st), sc], [dc, ch 3, dc]. {Sc, [dc, ch 3, dc] }. Repeat {} til end (6 more times). Ss into the first sc. (24 sts + 8 ch3-sps).
Round 4: Ch 1 (counts as first ss), hdc, [dc, ch 3, dc], hdc. {Ss, hdc, [dc, ch 3, dc], hdc}. Repeat {} til end (6 more times). Ss into the ch 1. (40 sts + 8 ch3-sps).
Round 5: Ch 1 (counts as first ss), ss, hdc. In the ch3-sp, [dc, ch 3, dc]. Hdc, ss. {2 ss, hdc. In the ch3-sp, [dc, ch 3, dc]. Hdc, ss}. Repeat {} til end (6 more times). Ss into the ch 1. (56 sts + 8 ch3-sps).
Unless you are crocheting the first flower (it will be the flower placed at the top left corner of the blanket), fasten off at the end of round 5.
Round 6: Ch 1 (counts as first ss), 2 ss, hdc. In the ch3-sp, [2 dc, picot, 2 dc]. Hdc, 2 ss. {3 ss, hdc. In the ch3-sp, [2 dc, picot, 2 dc]. Hdc, 2 ss}. Repeat {} til end (6 more times). Ss into the ch 1 and fasten off. (88 sts + 8 picot sts).
Joining the Flowers
The flowers are joined in the following order. We will use the join as you go method to join them. With this method, we will join each flower to the blanket while adding round 6 to the flower.
*Note: “yellow with green” means a yellow center with green petals.
