Retro Daisies Pillow

Hi! For my first blog post, I thought it should be a daisy pattern! I hope you enjoy the pattern and let me know if you have any questions. 🙂

There is a video tutorial on my YouTube channel for this daisy granny square:

Getting Started

Materials

  • 3.5 mm crochet hook
  • Scissors and a tapestry needle- for weaving in ends
  • 18 by 18 in (46 by 46 cm) square pillow insert
  • 5 buttons (1.5 cm in diameter)
  • Sport weight yarn

Yarn I Used

Hobbii Yarn Rainbow Cotton 8/6 (100% cotton, 114 yd (50 g) skeins)

  • 4 old rose (pink)
  • 3 vanilla (cream)
  • 1 pastel yellow (yellow)
  • 1 lime (lime)

Gauge and Size

18 sts and 8 rows = 4 inches

The gauge provided is measured with double crochet sts worked in rows.

Pillowcases should always be 1-2 inches smaller than the insert, so they are stretched over the insert. Hence, the front and the back of the pillow should both be about 16 by 16 inches (41 by 41 cm).

A Note about Yarn Substitution

I used Hobbii Rainbow Cotton 8/6 yarn for this project which is a sport weight yarn; however, you can use any sport or dk weight yarn for this pillow. After you have finished crocheting the front side of the pillowcase, measure it, and then it will fit a pillow insert that is one to two inches longer than it.

Joining the Granny Squares

To join the squares, you can use your favorite method! I have attached some pictures here to demonstrate the process I always use to join the squares for my pillows. I like to use a single crochet stitch in the backs of the squares, so the joining seam is hidden inside the pillow.

The pink yarn is used to join them into vertical columns, and then the vertical columns are joined together. Each column will have four granny squares in it.

The front side of the pillow will be about 15 by 15 in (38 by 38 cm). We will add a border, and then it will be about 16 by 16 inches (41 by 41 cm).

Joining the Squares into Vertical Columns

To ensure that the flowers are facing the same way, make sure each flower has two petals along the top.

Begin by folding the second square in the first vertical column over the first square in the first vertical column (picture 1). Insert the yarn (the color you would like to join them with) into the bottom right corner (the ch-spaces) of the squares. Ch 1 (picture 2).

Along the side, sc into each set of corresponding stitches (picture 3). When you reach the next corner (ch-sp), sc into it, and fasten off (picture 4).

Follow the same process to join the other squares in the first vertical column.

Then, join the other vertical columns with the same process (picture 6).

Joining the Vertical Columns Together

Begin by folding the second vertical column over the first vertical column (picture 1). Insert the yarn into the bottom right corners (the ch-spaces of the two squares). Ch 1 (picture 2).

Going up the side, sc into each set of corresponding stitches of the two columns. When you reach the ch-spaces that occur between the squares, simply sc into them as well (picture 3). When you reach the top of the row, sc into the corners (ch-sps), and fasten off.

Follow the same process to join the other vertical columns to the work.

Bordering the Front Side

Join the pink into one of the four corners of the pillow. [Ch 3, dc]. { *13 dc. In the ch 2-sp, [2 dc]. In the next ch2-sp, dc.* Repeat from * to * 2 more times. 13 dc. In the next ch2-sp (corner), [2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc] }. Repeat {} 2 more times. Repeat {} one more time, but in the last ch2-sp, [2 dc, ch 2, ss into the top of the ch 3, and fasten off]. (260 sts + 4 ch2-sps).

The Button Flap

Five buttons hold the bottom of the pillow together and allow the pillow to be taken on and off the insert. Hence, a few rows of stitches are added to the bottom of the front side to form the button flap. Later, when the pillow is joined, the back side of the pillow will be pulled over the buttons.

Row 1: Join the pink yarn (the color you would like to join the pillow with) into the dc st after the bottom left corner. [Ch 1 (does not count as a st), sc], sc into each dc st along the side of the pillow. Fasten off. (65).

Row 2: Join the lime yarn into the back loop of the 6th st of row 1. Ch 3, dc into the back loops of the following 54 sts (do not work into the last five sts of row 1). FLIP. (55).

Row 3: Ch 3, dc into each of the following sts from the previous row. FLIP. (55).

Rows 4-5: Same as row 3. At the end of row 5, fasten off.

Then, attach the buttons to the 6th, 17th, 28th, 39th, and 50th st of row 4.

The Back Side

The back is simply a traditional granny square.

Foundation Ring: With the lime yarn, ch 4, ss into the first ch to form a ring

Round 1: Ch 3, 2 dc into the ring, ch 1. {3 dc into the ring, ch 1}. Repeat { } 2 more times. Ss into the top of the ch 3. (12 sts + 4 ch-sps).

Round 2: Ch 3. {Into the next ch-sp, [3 dc, ch 1, 3 dc]}. Repeat { } 2 more times. Into the ch-sp, [3 dc, ch 1, 2 dc]. Ss into the top of the ch 3. (24 sts + 4 ch-sps).

Round 3: Ss into the space between the 3 dc shells. [Ch 3, 2 dc] into the space. {In the ch-sp, [3 dc, ch 1, 3 dc]. In the next space between the 3 dc shells, 3 dc}. Repeat { } 2 more times. In the next ch-sp, [3 dc, ch 1, 3 dc]. Ss into the top of the ch 3. (36 sts + 4 ch-sps).

Round 4: Ch 3. [3 dc] into the space between the next two 3 dc shells. In the ch-sp, [3 dc, ch 1, 3 dc]. {[3 dc] into the space between the next two 3 dc shells. [3 dc] into the space between the next two 3 dc shells. In the ch-sp, [3 dc, ch 1, 3 dc]}. Repeat { } two more times. [2 dc] into the space after the next 3 dc shell, and ss into the top of the ch 3. (48 sts + 4 ch-sps).

Rounds 5- 20: Continue on with the traditional granny square pattern (between 3 dc shells, [3 dc]. Into the ch-sps (corners), [3 dc, ch 1, 3 dc]). Remember, each side should increase by one 3 dc shell.

  • Rounds 5 – 9: Lime
  • Rounds 10 – 13 : Yellow
  • Rounds: 14 – 16: Pink
  • Rounds 17 – 20: Cream

For the color changes, simply fasten off after the ss at the end of the round. Then, join the new color into any space between two 3 dc shells of the previous round. [Ch 3, 2 dc] into the space. Then, continue on with the round.

Joining the Pillow

It’s time to join the pillow! It is joined along three sides (the buttons hold the bottom together) with a single crochet stitch into the corresponding stitches of the front and back side. We will simply insert the hook into a st of the front side and into a st of the back side, and then, work a single crochet st. Since the front side has more stitches per side than the back, after a few sets of corresponding stitches, the next stitch of the front side will correspond to the previous stitch of the back side.

Begin by laying the back side down with the wrong side facing up. Lay the front side on top of it with the right side facing up (picture 1). Join the pink yarn (the color of row 1 of the button flap) into the last sc st of row 1 of the button flap. Pull the yarn through (picture 2). This creates a continuous join between row 1 of the button flap and the joining seam.

[2 sc] into the corners (the ch-spaces- picture 3).

{Going up the side, sc into the following stitches (picture 4): 6 corresponding sts, then the next st of the front will correspond to the previous st of the back, *12 corresponding sts, then the next st of the front will correspond to the previous st of the back*, repeat * to * 3 more times, 6 corresponding stitches. Then, [2 sc] into the corners}.

Repeat {} two more times to join the other two sides. Then, ss into the first st of row 1 of the button flap and fasten off.

Then, slide the insert into the pillow. Pull the back over the buttons. The buttons should end up between the 3 dc shells of the second to last round of the back of the pillow.

Then, the pillow is finished! I hope you enjoyed this pattern. If you make it and post it on Instagram, make sure you tag me, so I can see it! You can also email me a picture at maggietrunkhill@daisygirlcrochet.com.
