Behind the Scenes of the Rose Granny Square Pillow

Hi! It has been a while since I have written a new pattern! Most of the YouTube videos I have been uploading lately are focused on teaching crochet techniques, so I am very excited to get back to filming some pattern videos. First up is this rose pillow. I am posting the pattern for Valentine’s Day because it includes a lot of shades of pink. However, it is not intended to be a Valentine’s Day pattern. I hope you enjoy the pattern, and I can’t wait to see the colors that you choose!

The Pattern

There are two YouTube videos for this pattern: one for the rose and one for granny square. You can just crochet the roses to use as decorations if you would like! The full pillow pattern is available as a pdf. I will add all the links below!

Pattern Details

Materials

  • 3.00 mm crochet hook
  • Scissors and a tapestry needle- for weaving in ends
  • 18 by 18 inch (45 by 45 cm) square pillow insert
  • 5 buttons (1.5 cm in diameter)
  • Yarn
  • Stitch marker (optional)

Yarn I Used

Hobbii Rainbow Cotton 8/4 Yarn (100% cotton; 160 m (175 yds) / 50 g (1.75 oz) skeins)

  • 2 petunia pink (dark pink)
  • 2 old rose (pink)
  • 2 pastel pink (light pink)
  • 2 light blue (light blue)
  • 1 deep jungle green (dark green)
  • 1 petrol green (green)

Yarn Substitution

I used one of my favorite yarns for this pillow- Hobbii Rainbow Cotton 8/4. While it is a sock weight yarn, my gauge swatch with it matches a lot of the sport weight yarns that I have used. Yarn weights tend to vary depending on the brand, so if you are using a different yarn, compare the yd/g to determine if it would be a good substitute. Otherwise, you can really use any lightweight yarn for this pillow! After you finish the front side, measure it, and it will fit a pillow insert that is 1-2 inches longer than it!

Gauge

24 sts and 11 rows = 4 inches (10 cm)

The gauge provided is measured with U.S. double crochet stitches (UK treble) worked in rows.

Size

Pillows should always be 1-2 in (2.5 – 5 cm) smaller than the insert, so they are stretched over the insert. This rose pillowcase is about 16 by 16 in (41 by 41 cm), so it fits an 18 by 18 in (45 by 45 cm) pillow insert.

Enjoy the Pattern!

I hope you enjoy the pattern! If you crochet any of the rose granny squares, I would love to see some pictures (if you share them on Instagram, make sure you tag me), and can’t wait to hear about what you decide to create with them!
